Trump lawyer says President isn't under investigation, despite tweets

That will only add to a sense of foreboding that pervades the White House, from the crammed collective work spaces of junior officials all the way to the Oval Office.

TAMARA KEITH, BYLINE: The tweets started just before 8 in the morning, but the one that set off a storm came at 9:07.

President Donald Trump says he is being investigated for firing FBI Director James Comey by the man who told him to do it.

To the contrary: Thanks to The Washington Post, we now know that collusion is only one of three subject areas that the FBI investigation, now led by special counsel Robert Mueller, is exploring. It's not clear that he would be, though, at this early stage.

Rosenstein is the only official who could do it because Attorney General Jeff Sessions previously recused himself from the probe into Russian interference in last year's presidential campaign and whether anyone close to Trump colluded with the Russians.

Trump left yesterday with his wife and young son to spend the weekend at Camp David for the first time, and is scheduled to return to Washington late today.

LESTER HOLT: So there was. But this week made it strikingly clear that Donald Trump has an invariable "addiction to self-destructive behavior", as former acting Central Intelligence Agency director John McLaughlin observed on MSNBC. "He is a good guy". The Republicans like him. Comey said he took this "hope", coming from the president of the United States, as a direction. But Trump later said in a television interview that he fired Comey at least in part because he was frustrated over the Russian Federation investigation Comey was leading. According to the Post, Mueller plans to interview both officials soon, and also plans to question Richard Ledgett, who until recently held the No. 2 job at the NSA.

She said Trump has "embarked on an effort to undermine anyone with the ability to bring any misdeeds to light" and the Senate shouldn't let that happen. And in reality, it isn't his choice. She's the associate attorney general, which makes her third in command at the Justice Department behind Rosenstein and Sessions.

He was sacked by Trump on May 9.

ROD ROSENSTEIN: Senator, I'm not going to follow any orders unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders. "That combination of things I had never experienced before, but it led me to believe I gotta write it down and I gotta write it down in a detailed way", he said, adding, "I knew there might come a day where I might need a record to defend not just myself but the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and our integrity".

In the statement Thursday evening, Rosenstein warned that US citizens should be skeptical about anonymous allegations.

Be smart: Trump, notorious for his litigiousness in NY, is playing an inside-outside game: stockpiling talent to protect him legally, while publicly trying to discredit the investigators and whatever they might eventually say or do.
