Trump uses social media to question probe of his campaign

President Trump

Adam Entous is one of the reporters who broke the Washington Post story that the FBI has (supposedly) opened a criminal investigation into the president and is now interviewing senior intelligence officials as part of that probe.

Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he believes Trump fired him last month because he resisted a request to drop the Russian Federation investigation, especially as it related to former national security adviser Michael.

The stated focus has been Russia's alleged efforts to tilt last November's presidential election Trump's way, and whether the winner's campaign was involved in any way.

Quoting officials, the newspaper said one event of interest to Mueller is an exchange on March 22, when Coats told associates that Trump had asked him to intervene with Comey to get him to back off the focus on Trump's former national security advisor Mike Flynn as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of the Russian Federation affair.

The obstruction of justice investigation into Trump began days after Comey was sacked on May 9, according to people familiar with the matter, the Washington Post said.

Responding to claims about the investigation, Trump's personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz, told the Washington Post: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

Trump followed up about an hour later with another critical tweet: "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

It is a significant development in that while the investigation into Russian interference in the election has been ongoing, it is the first time that Trump himself has potentially been implicated.

The committee leaders said in a statement that they "look forward to future engagements" with Mr Mueller.

Trump said he fired Comey for poor performance, though he ealso reportedly told a group of Russian officials that the Comey dismissal would help get the Russia probe behind him. He declined to say whether he thought Trump sought to obstruct justice, saying that would be up to Mueller to sort out.

"Yeah", Entous said, "that's what we were told by our sources that basically Mueller, when he came in, basically absorbed a lot of investigations that were out there that had been started, looking at different aspects of the case".

Comey testified before the Senate intelligence committee last week and confirmed that he gave Mueller the memos he wrote detailing his interactions with Trump ahead of his firing.

The Post report cites anonymous sources who were briefed on requests made by investigators.

That isn't true anymore, according to reporting by The Washington Post on Wednesday night.

"That means it wasn't Robert Mueller's decision personally to launch this investigation into the president - it would have been started before him, is that right?"
