Two-goal Ronaldo fires Real to 12th European title

On a wonderful evening in Cardiff, the Spaniards did it again - beating Juventus 4-1 in the Champions League final to collect their 12th European Cup and become the first team in 27 years to retain the trophy.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the opening goal in the 20th minute, but Juventus answered minutes later with a stunning goal from Mario Mandzukic to make it 1-1 at halftime.

By following up on their Champions League triumph past year against Atletico Madrid, Real have also become the first European side to reach consecutive Club World Cups.

They came away as losers for the seventh time in nine European Cup finals having also lost to Barcelona in 2015.

It meant Los Blancos had scored in every match they have played this season - all 60 of them - and for Ronaldo it was a 41st goal of the campaign and a 104th in the Champions League.

Although the first-half appeared the two teams were equally matched, the second half proved a different story as Juventus had no answer for a dominating Madrid squad.

After such a terrific first half, the second half was much slower.

Juve's misery was compounded by the petty sending off of winger Juan Cuadrado, who was only on the pitch for 19 minutes, and the scoring of a fourth goal by substitute Asensio on 90 minutes.

"It was a good choice by the coach and I'm very happy". "I'm happy here, it's my dream to be here, we've just won the Champions League and I'm not thinking about anything other than celebrating".

The setback notwithstanding, Juventus looked unfazed, and continued to pile some pressure on Real, and it wouldn't take too long before they would get a goal of their own to draw level in the match.

Ronaldo was at the heart of it, playing the ball into the path of Dani Carvajal who cut it straight back to allow the Portuguese forward to sweep the ball sweetly into the far corner.

The Spanish champions were utterly dominant after the break, however. I have the chance to say this every year.

At the same time, they were facing a Real Madrid side that had rampaged into their second consecutive final. "We played against a team that had only conceded three goals and we scored four".
