Tyson Employee Among Shooting Victims

The Republican congressional baseball team was practicing on a suburban Virginia field Wednesday when James T. Hodgkinson of IL opened fire. The family said, "we continue to be in disbelief that he would be part of this heinous attack".

Lobbyist Matt Mika, 38, was shot in his chest and arm, suffered massive trauma and is in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital here.

Tyson Foods has confirmed one of their employees was among the shooting victims Wednesday at a Congressional softball practice in Alexandria, Va.

"Baseball is one of his great passions, and he has always loved the congressional team", Mika's family said in a release.

A relative tells 7 Action News that Matt Mika, the MI native who was shot during the GOP baseball practice in Virginia on Wednesday morning, has been upgraded to serious condition.




Mika is a former aide to Michigan Republican Rep. Tim Walberg. Mika once served on Walberg's staff. He's an Oakland County native and graduate of Adrian College.

The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson III, 66, from IL, died from gunshot wounds from police.

U.S. Rep. Mike Bishop gave an eyewitness account Wednesday to Detroit radio station WWJ.

Scalise, a member of the House Republican leadership as the majority whip, appeared to have been shot in the hip.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman said he was not at the practice.
