White House Communications Director Resigns

A top communications aide to President Donald Trump has resigned, in what many inside and outside the White House see as the first shoe to drop before a wider overhaul.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer has been showing signs of strain under his job in recent weeks, and joked with reporters over drinks last week in Jerusalem that they had to take shots if they asked him work-related questions. "Throughout the trip, that was the common thread - that uniting the Muslim world, talking about it with (Israeli) Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu, talking about it even with the Pope, that wherever he went on this nine-day trip, protecting our country, protecting the world's people was at the front of that discussion", Spicer said.

In a statement, White House chief of staff Reince Priebus thanked Dubke for his service.

A White House spokesman says President Donald Trump has a "fairly unbelievable" relationship with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"My dashboard warning light was clearly on and I think that was the case with all of us in the intelligence community - very concerned about the nature of these approaches to the Russians", Clapper told NBC's "Meet The Press".

Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham told CNN he doubted the Kushner reports were accurate. Dubke founded Crossroads Media, a GOP firm that specializes in political advertising.

Dubke said in a statement it had been an honor to serve Trump and "my distinct pleasure to work side by side, day by day with the staff of the communications and press departments".

In an interview on Fox News on Tuesday, Conway said Dubke "made very clear that he would see through the president's worldwide trip, and come to work every day and work hard even through that trip because there was much to do here back at the White House". Shortly after the election, Kushner is reported to have discussed setting up a secret communications channel with the Russian government to facilitate sensitive discussions about the conflict in Syria.

Kellyanne Conway, White House counselor, has told The Associated Press that Dubke handed in his resignation before President Donald Trump left for his worldwide trip earlier this month. "He's president of the United States, even if it's late night thoughts or early morning thoughts, they are his thoughts", he said.

The president returned to his normal Twitter routine later in the morning by slamming Democrats over the probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump has repeatedly and angrily insisted that there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation, and has decried reports about the matter as false. However, Politico's Matthew Nussbaum wasn't so much interested in the president's reaction to Griffin, which we've already received, but the possibility that Trump is exercising selective outrage.

"We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation & military".

Trump is also struggling with his legislative agenda, as health care and tax reform initiatives remain behind schedule with several fiscal deadlines looming.
