Apple ordered to pay $506 million to Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation

WARF sued Apple in 2014 of infringing on a patent of a predictor circuit that improves processor performance

Apple today has been ordered by a US judge to pay $507 million in damages to the University of Wisconsin-Madison's patent licensing arm for patent infringement.

This has unlikely gone down well at Apple, as the $506m fine is almost double the $234 million in damages that a Jury ordered Apple to pay back in 2015. Initially Apple was on the hook for $234 million, owed to the University of Wisconsin-Madison (WARF) after it won a patent dispute against the Cupertino outfit.

Apple did not respond to a Fortune request for comment on the judge's decision.

Not that Apple would ever use someone else's technology without permission, but that seems to be exactly what happened here, and when Apple got court ordered to pay a judgment, it did not do so.

U.S. District Judge William Conley decreed the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) should be awarded an additional $272 million after a jury originally adjudicated $234 million in compensation, according to Reuters.

Apple is going to have to feed a recognized patent troll hundreds of millions of dollars for infringing on a patent that has to do with processor efficiency. Claims were made by Nokia that Apple had in fact infringed several of its patents, and the issue was raised the US International Trade Commission.

The suit goes all the way back to 2014 when the university accused Apple of infringing a patent titled, "Table based data speculation circuit for parallel processing computer".

The patent applies to a "predictor circuit" created to speed processing by predicting user instructions. Conley has said he would not rule on that case until Apple has an opportunity to appeal the original jury verdict.
