Baby Charlie: Are You Still Praying For a Miracle?

Charlie Gard’s Parents Return to Court For Life Support Hearing

Armstrong said the parents had dropped their legal fight for Charlie to continue to receive treatment because scans showed that the child suffered irreversible damage.

"Recognise that children do not belong to their parents", said Kennedy.

A spokeswoman for Great Ormond Street Hospital, where Charlie is being treated, was not immediately able to provide details.

But they said Charlie's parents were still in dispute with doctors over the detail of hospice care plans.

"I will make a final decision tomorrow".

Harnwell reflected that Church teaching says "the primary role of medicine is to heal, and then to alleviate suffering when being healed is no longer a possibility".

Earlier:A High Court judge asked to decide where terminally-ill baby Charlie Gard will end his life has started hearing proposals put forward by the little boy's parents.

At the heart of the controversy is Charlie Gard, a young infant in the United Kingdom who suffers from a rare mitochondrial disease (mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome).

Ms Butler-Cole suggested that Charlie might be taken home if life-support treatment was ended shortly after his arrival.

They also failed to persuade European Court of Human Rights judges to intervene. Monday's announcement that Charlie's parents would no longer challenge the decision to withdraw treatment came just days before the High Court's final decision had been expected.

"We promised Charlie every day we would take him home", she was quoted as saying by British media. The hospital also referred to the work Dr. Michio Hirano, the specialist in Charlie's disorder and professor of neurology at the Columbia University Medical Center in NY, who was brought in to evaluate the child for possible experimental treatment.

"There is one simple reason why treatment can not now go ahead", he said.

Congressional Republicans sought to pass legislation that would give the Gard family USA residency and a potential route to treatment there, although it wasn't not clear whether that would ultimately have enabled them to obviate a British court decision.

Mr Armstrong said the parents' objection to a hospice is that Charlie would only live for "a few hours" and that "if it was days it would be different". A whole lot of wasted time.

He continued: "Is that how our money should be spent in the National Health Service?"

Harnwell stressed that while he didn't want to "make a political point out of other people's awful tragedy", there is a "very real debate to be had" on the issue. At the time of writing, the question whether Charlie is allowed to return home is yet to be determined.

The judge said it was a "very, very sad conclusion".

"This case is now about time", Armstrong said.

The issue also touches on the debate surrounding the push for euthanasia and living wills now taking place in several countries.

Charlie may take his last breath, but even after that Christians know the God who gives the breath of life.

Afterwards, an unnamed family friend said: "The hospital have set the bar so high that in terms of clinical team for Charlie's end of life nothing seemed good enough for Gosh".
