Beautiful Boy Charlie Gard Dies

Pope Francis offered his sympathies yesterday to the parents of Charlie Gard, the baby who became the center of a bitter court battle after his parents sought experimental medical treatment for him in the United States.

Charlie died on Friday, July 28, a week before his first birthday.

On Friday, the Pope posted another message: "I entrust little Charlie to the Father and pray for his parents and all those who loved him".

Gard's parents fought a five-month legal battle for him to be taken to the United States for experimental treatment.

Pope Francis had publicly expressed support to bring Charlie to America for treatment in the past, and tweeted a tribute to the boy on Twitter last night.

Downing Street issued a statement from Prime Minister Theresa May saying: 'I am deeply saddened by the death of Charlie Gard.

Connie Yates, the mother of critically ill baby Charlie Gard, arrives with father Chris Gard at the High Court in London, Monday, July 24, 2017.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence tweeted that he was saddened to hear of Charlie Gard's death.

'Our lovely little boy has gone, we're so proud of him, ' Ms Yates said in a statement yesterday after confirming he had died just one week before his first birthday on August 4.

Britain's courts, after hearing a wealth of medical evidence, ruled that it would go against Charlie's best interests to have the experimental nucleoside therapy advocated by a USA professor of neurology, Michio Hirano.

On Thursday, with the hospital and Charlie's parents still at an impasse, the judge's order to remove life support and move Charlie to hospice took effect.

On Monday, Charlie's parents gave up their fight to take Charlie to the U.S. after new brain and muscle scans revealed their son had deteriorated and was therefore less likely to benefit from the experimental treatment, while his doctors and parents battled in court. The hospital reported that its doctors and nurses were receiving serious threats over Charlie's case and London police were investigating. They called Charlie their hero.

She added: "As a writer I have been able to represent Charlie Gard's family for free". It took away his ability to see, hear, move or breathe on his own.

They lost a series of appeals in British courts and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

John Cooper QC, an expert on media law who advises clients on crisis management, said the decision to go for publicity was a complex one.

After further medical tests, Chris Gard told reporters, "we've decided it is no longer in Charlie's best interest to pursue treatment, and we will let our son go and be with the angels". Charlie's parents said the support had given them renewed hope. But doctors at Great Ormond Street hospital, where he was treated, did not agree. "We had the chance but we weren't allowed to give you that chance".

"It is impossible for any of us to comprehend or even begin to imagine the agony to which Charlie's parents have been subjected in recent weeks and months as they have had to come to terms with the decision that they have now made", he said in a judgement. "Sweet dreams baby. Sleep tight our attractive little boy", Charlie's parents said in a statement after they gave up their fight.
