China accuses India of violating 1890 treaty on Sikkim

India using Bhutan to justify trespass into Chinese territory Experts

Tensions between India and China have risen over the border row in Sikkim sector as both sides have refused budge in Doklam region, where the armies of both sides are engaged in a stand-off.

The confrontation - at a tri-junction where the borders of China, India and Bhutan meet - is the longest between the two sides in recent times.

As the stand-off between the two nations continues for its third week in the Doklam area, longest since 1962, more and more experts from both India and China are asserting war as a strong possibility if the situation is not resolved.

Despite the fact that the usa and China had achieved a level of understanding after a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Florida, grindings between the two nations over the South China Sea proceed.

China has accused Indian troops of preventing it from building a road.

Contrary to the Chinese governments assertion that Jawaharlal Nehru had accepted the 1890 Sino- British treaty over Sikkim to buttress Beijings claim over the Dokalam area, the former prime minister had pointed out to China that it is claiming sizeable part of Bhutans territory.

On July 2, the Indian Army rushed additional troops to the area to engage the Chinese People's Liberation Army in a "non-combative mode".

The Global Times write-up said India chalked out its moves ahead of Modi's USA visit to impress Tump and the United States administration, the report said. The Indian Army came in Bhutan's support two days later and asked China to stop altering the status quo.

However, the Chinese foreign office seems to have missed the 1967 military conflict - the last that the two countries had. As the tiny Himalayan Kingdom was not party to the 1890 agreement between Britain and China, a dispute remains between China and Bhutan over where their common border lies. The corridor, sometime referred to as the "Chicken's Neck", is a narrow slice of Indian territory squeezed between Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and China.

China says India should not interfere in the dispute between Thimpu and Beijing. It is more interested in putting up peacetime replenishment with sea-bases for supplementing its naval capabilities than establishing military bases in Indian Ocean. In return, the United States has proclaimed India a Major Defense Partner giving its access to the advanced weapons Washington provides only to its most-trusted allies. "Their misleading, unfound China-phobia, however, might lead to strategic myopia and hurt India's own interests", Xinhua news agency said in a commentary. The head of the US Pacific Command Admiral Harry Harris recently revealed that the US and Indian militaries are sharing intelligence on Chinese submarine and ship movements in the Indian Ocean.

He, however, said the line for diplomatic communication between India and China is "open and smooth". Earlier, it was revealed that a U.S. destroyer sailed near Xisha Islands, which are located in the South China Sea and claimed by China, Efe news reported.

The row between the Asian neighbors could impact talks between Modi and the Chinese president should they cross paths at the summit this week. Successive Indian governments have also endorsed this, " he said.
