Crisis Intensifies In Venezuela Ahead Of Controversial Vote

5 Killed in Violence during Venezuelan Opposition's General Strike against Maduro Regime

Maduro's regime has forbidden protests through Tuesday, saying violators will face prison terms of five to 10 years. "This power may be exercised by calling a National Constituent Assembly for the objective of transforming the State, creating a new juridical order and drawing up a new Constitution". Highways were mostly empty and businesses shuttered across the country as millions of people observed the 48-hour strike and activists threw up roadblocks in many neighborhoods to keep others from getting to work.

The neighboring country said it would give 150,000 Venezuelans who had overstayed permission to remain another three months before they had to leave.

Despite the USA sanctions and calls from countries including Canada to cancel Sunday's vote, the Maduro regime has shown no signs of backing down.

With regard to the legitimacy of the vote itself, the spokesperson noted that it is "a hugely controversial issue" amplified by the fact that there had been an unofficial consultation by the opposition on the constituent assembly.

The government announced the ban on all protests that "might disturb the electoral process" of Sunday's election.

The U.S. placed economic sanctions on 13 current and former Venezuelan officials earlier this week in response to the vote going forward.

Over 100 people have died in anti-government unrest convulsing Venezuela since April, when the opposition launched protests demanding conventional elections to end almost two decades of socialist rule.

"Constituent Assembly" would have the power rewrite the constitution and shut down the existing opposition-led legislature. Eric Farnsworth, vice-president of the Council of the Americas and the Americas Society in Washington, said the vote will be the end of democracy in Venezuela. "No more dictatorship. Maduro, resign" during a protest against the socialist government in Caracas on May 2.

Romero said the 23-year-old musician was playing his violin on the streets of Caracas and was not breaking any laws when he was detained Thursday.

Those who are against Maduro's brand of socialism said they would not vote in Sunday's election aimed at selecting the "constituent assembly".

Venezuela has seen near-daily protests since April against government attempts to undermine the opposition while the country has seen widespread shortages of food, medicines and other essentials.

Global concern has mounted, with the United States, European Union, United Nations and major Latin American nations urging Mr.

A top Cuban official said his country had no intention of trying to mediate a solution to Venezuela's crisis, rejecting the idea of what he called "foreign meddling" and voicing full support for Maduro, a key ideological and economic ally of the island's government. The decision was quickly reversed but it sparked a protest movement demanding a new presidential election.

The toll is expected to climb as authorities enforce a ban on protests ahead of a polarizing vote Sunday to begin the rewriting of Venezuela's constitution.

The oil export-dependent economy will shrink 12% this year, after a contraction of 18% last year, according to the latest forecast from the International Monetary Fund. "We will respond with the TAKING OF VENEZUELA".
