Family Of Alton Sterling Sues His Killers & City Of Baton Rouge

New revelation in Alton Sterling case

The children of Alton Sterling, the black man fatally shot by a white police officer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, almost a year ago, are suing the city, the police department and the officer, the Associated Press reported.

"There is an environment that is prevalent in the Baton Rouge Police Department that has allowed officers to not de-escalate", Sterling family attorney Mike Adams said Tuesday.

The wrongful death lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and said Sterling's shooting happened because of poor police training and inadequate procedures.

Attorney L. Chris Stewart, who is also part of the family's legal team, expects law enforcement officers - both current and former - to back the accusations laid out in the case.

"The City of Baton Rouge has a long standing pervasive policy of tolerating racist behavior by some of its officers", the lawsuit says, adding there have been multiple reports of officers making racist comments and the tolerance of such comments has led to the mistreatment of the black community. In addition to the city and police department, the lawsuit specifically names officer Blane Salamoni, who killed Sterling last July; his colleague Howie Lake and their chief Carl Dabadie Jr.as defendants.

Two white cops shot Sterling last summer after receiving a call about a man wearing a red shirt holding a gun.

The U.S. Department of Justice decided against filing charges because investigators could not prove that the officers acted unreasonable and willfully.

The family of Philando Castile, who was shot and killed previous year by a St. Anthony, Minnesota, police officer, reached a $3 million settlement with the city days after the officer in that case was acquitted of second-degree manslaughter. After telling Sterling to put his hands on the hood of a auto, a struggle ensued and Lake used his stun gun on Sterling. Sterling and then pulled his gun and fired three shots into Mr.

The children are suing for an unknown amount of money, and the Baton Rouge Police Department and the city of Baton Rouge are named in the suit.
