Hamburg: One dead, Several Injured in Supermarket Knife Attack

Hamburg knife attack At least one dead in Germany

There was no immediate word on his possible motive and police said that they are "still investigating in every direction". The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group releases a video purportedly featuring the attacker announcing he would carry out an "operation" in Germany, and presenting himself as a "soldier of the caliphate".

But previous year an evaluator who interviewed the Palestinian - who spoke fluent English, Swedish and Norwegian - said that while he had mental health problems, he did not pose an imminent danger, Mr. Voss said.

Hamburg's mayor was to lay flowers at the site of the attack in the city's Barmbek area, Grote said.

There are reports that he is known Islamist and shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest" in Arabic) as he fled.

Although the man's motive remained unclear, authorities believe he acted alone. He had light injuries at the time of his arrest, they said. One of the men was injured during the encounter, they said. The BBC asked a police official whether they considered this a terror attack and were told that police are in the early stages of their investigation and can not rule anything out at this point.

"He ripped off the packaging and then suddenly brutally attacked the 50-year-old man who later died", police spokeswoman Kathrin Hennings said.

In 2016, ISIL also claimed a suicide bomb attack in the southern city of Ansbach which wounded 15 victims, and a man's axe rampage on a train in Bavaria that hurt five, before the perpetrator was shot dead by police. A 35-year-old man was also injured while overpowering the suspect.

A 26-year-old assailant made what Hamburg police describe as a "totally unexpected' attack in an Edeka grocery store in Hamburg, where he indiscriminately stabbed seven people with a kitchen knife".

In both of these cases, the attackers had been asylum seekers. In December a Tunisian asylum-seeker drove a truck into a Berlin Christmas market, killing twelve and injuring 56, which motivated Germany lawmakers to tighten procedures on admitting refugees.

Plainclothes officers captured the man, who was slightly injured.

He later wounded two other men in the supermarket before fleeing the scene.

The attacker had been scheduled to be deported, but the process had been held up as he lacked identity papers, Scholz said.
