Iran Claims Launch of Rocket Carrying Satellite into Space

Iran Successfully Launched into Low Orbit Satellite Carrier Rocket

Though the newly recertified deal limiting Iran's nuclear program doesn't explicitly bar the development of ballistic missiles, the us considers it a violation of the "spirit" of the deal, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Thursday.

The U.S. Treasury Department on Friday hit Iran with new sanctions for its Thursday launch of a satellite-carrying rocket. The action breaches a UN Security Council resolution due to the possibility that it could be used in ballistic missile development, according to the State Department.

The top lawmaker pointed to Iran's paramount status in the Middle East and said imposing new sanctions on the country is harmful to the U.S.

'The US government will continue to aggressively counter Iran´s ballistic missile-related activity, whether it be a provocative space launch. or likely support to Yemeni Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia such as occurred this past weekend, ' Mnuchin said.

'These sanctions. underscore the United States´ deep concerns with Iran´s continued development and testing of ballistic missiles and other provocative behavior, ' Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement.

In another allegation against the United States adversary, Mr Mnuchin said that missile attacks on USA partner Saudi Arabia over the weekend by Houthi rebels in Yemen had likely come with the support of Iran.

The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions on six Iranian firms owned or controlled by the Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group.

The "Simorgh" rocket is capable of carrying a satellite weighing 550 pounds (250 kilograms), Iran state television said. A spokesman for US Strategic Command Joint Space Operations Center, Air Force Capt. Brian Maguire, told CNN there was "nothing new to add to the satellite catalog" following the reported launch.

It has recently become known that US President Donald Trump's administration insists on inspecting "suspicious" military facilities in Iran.

Mr Trump's administration has also been pushing for inspections of sensitive Iranian military sites where USA intelligence agencies believe Iran may be conducting illicit activity prohibited by the nuclear pact.
