Iraqi Forces Poised to Declare Victory in Mosul

Iraq is to declare victory

IS swept across much of Iraq's Sunni Arab heartland in a lightning offensive that year, proclaiming a self-styled "caliphate" straddling Iraq and neighboring Syria.

The militants captured Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, in a matter of days in the summer of 2014.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has congratulated the country's armed forces for the victorious eight-month battle to liberate Mosul from three years of jihadist rule.

Iraqi troops, who are supported by a US -led worldwide coalition, last week hung white banners and the country's flags on lamp posts and damaged buildings as authorities were planning a week of nationwide celebrations.

Almost one million Mosul residents have been displaced by the fighting - with many living in camps outside the city with little shelter from the summer sun.

Iraqi authorities will imminently announce a final victory in the battle to recapture Mosul from the ISIS group, a United States general said on Saturday.

Iraqi forces battle the last few hundred jihadists in Mosul's historic centre.

The Iraqi security forces have still been facing pockets of resistance, but they're already claiming victory against Islamic State.

November 1, 2016- The army said it has entered Mosul city for the first time since 2014.

Iraq's prime minister celebrated with troops on Sunday after they drove Islamic State militants from some of their last strongholds in Mosul, even as heavy fighting continued in a small portion of the Old City neighborhood.

Backed by coalition airstrikes, an array of Iraqi forces gradually clawed back territory from Islamic State until reaching Mosul, the group's de facto capital in Iraq, last October.

Meanwhile, Iraqi security forces expect to take full control of Mosul in the next hours as ISIS's defensive lines collapse, state TV reported on Saturday.

But the fight grew tougher when Iraqi forces entered the densely populated Old City on the western bank of the Tigris River that divides the city. The government does not reveal casualty figures, but a funding request from the US Department of Defense showed that the Counter Terrorism Service, which has spearheaded the fight in Mosul, had suffered 40 percent losses.

The government announced the "liberation" of eastern Mosul in January, but the west of the city, with its narrow, winding streets, has presented a more hard challenge.
