Local Police Association Leader Reacts to President Trump's Comments on Handling Suspects

No immediate military transgender change, top officer says

President Donald Trump seemed to encourage police to be more violent in handling potential offenders during a speech to law enforcement officers on Friday.

"I said please don't be too nice - like when you guys put somebody in the vehicle and you're protecting their head ..."

The assurance came after Trump's remarks to a group of officers on Long Island, N.Y.

Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, said of Trump's comments, "It just - it's the wrong message".

"I have to tell you, you know, the laws are so horrendously stacked against us, because for years and years, they've been made to protect the criminal".

The department issued the statement after Trump told police officers "don't be too nice" during a speech that was largely about combating criminal gangs. Among them was Rodman Serrano, 23, a child of immigrants from El Salvador and Brentwood High School graduate, who said that Mr. Trump was spreading an exaggerated narrative that assumed all Latinos are being gang members. These laws are stacked against you.

"Managing use of force is one of the most hard challenges faced by law enforcement agencies", stated the International Association of Chiefs of Police, according to Chicago Tribune. "I said, 'you can take the hand away, ' okay?" "And we're backing you 100 percent". It was the president's first speech on LI since he held campaign rallies in Bethpage and Patchogue previous year.

"Police can not treat every community like an invading army, and encouraging violence by police is irresponsible and reprehensible", Zeke Johnson, senior director of programs at the United States chapter of Amnesty International, told HuffPost.

The Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement after Trump's speech that it has strict rules and procedures about how prisoners should be handled.

However, he singled out one Republican official - the only one of the many he recognized from the dais who was not actually in the room.

Nearly in passing, Mr. Trump criticized the Senate for refusing to approve a plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act and called for the nation's health care law - President Barack Obama's signature domestic achievement - to "implode".

Then, the president further clarified his comments. We call on the president to immediately and unequivocally condemn police brutality.

Robert Driscoll, a former Justice Department Civil Rights Division official under the President George W. Bush administration, was also critical.
