Malaysia among Asia-Pacific countries with most new AIDS infections

UN: AIDS-related Deaths Decline

International AIDS Society president Linda-Gail Bekker and President of the French National Ethics Advisory Committee and conference chairman Jean-Francois Delfraissy speak at the opening of the 9th International AIDS Society conference on HIV Science on July 23, 2017 in Paris.

Doctors in the country have said that since that burst of treatment the child has not required any other medical attention for the virus for the past eight and a half years.

Researchers say they hope to learn from the case of the child, born in South Africa, to save others from having to take powerful daily medication as they are growing up and for the rest of their lives.

However, Violari believes that the remission may be durable in the case of the South African girl's case.

But this is indeed a step in the right direction as most people who are HIV positive have to take daily antiretroviral drugs in order to protect their immune system and prevent them developing AIDS.

In total, 76.1 million people have been infected with HIV, the virus that causes Aids, since the epidemic started in the 1980s.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the leading AIDS scientist in the U.S., said the girl does not have a gene mutation that gives natural resistance to the HIV infection, and thus concluded that her remission is likely due to the early treatment she received as an infant.

The child may provide vital information for a break through on learning how HIV can be cured.

Injecting drug use accounted for 27 new cases, while there were three cases of mother-to-child transmission.

They were given antiretroviral treatment for 40 weeks after being found to have high detectable levels of HIB in their blood shortly after being born in 2007.

According to WebMD, children in MS and France have also been documented as having suppressed the virus for periods of time, also.

ART not only stops HIV from replicating and attacking a patient's immune system, but also curbs its spread to sexual partners.

The early therapy, which attacks the virus before it has a chance to fully establish itself, has been implicated in child "cure" cases twice before as the starting point on when the patient may have likely gotten cured of HIV. This is a reservoir of the virus which is integrated into a small proportion of immune cells.

In fighting off full blown infections after lengthier periods of treatments early in life as two two other children born with HIV one in France and one in MS had shown similar promise.

Treatment with ART started when it was nearly nine weeks old but was interrupted at 40 weeks when the virus had been suppressed, and the child was monitored regularly for any signs of relapse.

The report, compiled by the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) "Ending AIDS: Progress Towards the 90-90 Targets", said the other nine Asia-Pacific countries that had large constituencies of new HIV infections past year are India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Thailand.
