Tech Company To Invest $10B, Build Factory In Wisconsin

Steve Doyle skeptical of luring Foxconn to Wisconsin with millions in incentives

Foxconn, the maker of iPhone chips, flat screen TV panels and other electronics items, has picked southeastern Wisconsin over other us states to build a new manufacturing plant.

Foxconn officials have promised to invest $10 billion in the project, with Wisconsin taxpayers putting $3 billion on the table in tax incentives.

Trump has been talking about bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States since the day he became President. Foxconn will spend $10 billion in the construction of the facility over the next three years. Foxconn's plant is projected to generate up to $181 million in local and state tax annually, and will span over a 20 million-square-feet campus.

Wisconsin state Senator Jennifer Shilling, a Democrat, questioned whether there is "legislative appetite for a US$1 to US$3 billion corporate welfare package". Speaker Ryan immediately leaned forward and said "billion". Economic development officials from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin have all vied for Foxconn's attention.

Foxconn is expected to initially invest $10 billion in the plant, which will employ around 3,000 workers.

Foxconn has announced plans to build a massive facility in the United States, one that will include housing units, service businesses, stores and more.

It still isn't clear if Trump was referring to Foxconn or Apple specifically.

The Lehigh Valley could still be in play for a Foxconn facility, one of the world's largest electronics manufacturers.

President Trump announced on Wednesday that the electronics manufacturer Foxconn will be building a new USA plant in Wisconsin to produce LCD screens.

Earlier this week, President Trump told The Wall Street Journal in an interview this week that Apple was planning to build three "big, big, big" plants in the U.S. Apple is yet to confirm the claim. declined to comment.

President Donald Trump has called for companies to build more products in the United States and open additional plants.

The company is also looking to Detroit for a possible manufacturing plant, though the sources did not specify for what.

It's also unclear if Wisconsin, or any state for the matter, can supply Foxconn with the thousands of skilled laborers it would need to manufacture electronics at scale.
