The Lucas Museum will break ground in LA next year

George Lucas finally gets approval from LA to build his Museum of Narrative Art

Los Angeles officials have cleared the way for Star Wars creator George Lucas to build a 1.5 billion dollar (£1.1 billion) Museum of Narrative Art.

The completion date for the LMNA has not been released however, Price is in hopes that the project will break ground this year.

The museum is considered a gift to Los Angeles city and comes with an endowment of at least $400 million. Considering how much of a mess the Chicago project turned into, buttering up the city seems like it was a solid strategy.

Lucas said his museum won't just focus on movies, however, but on the entire history of narrative storytelling, from the days of cave painting to digital film.

The Lucas Museum will be the latest addition to L.A.'s cultural landscape.

Lucas had to abandon plans to build the museum in Chicago and San Francisco after facing challenges in those two cities.

The museum describes narrative art as art that tells - or narrates - a story through imagery. "They said no. We were both basically heartbroken", Lucas said. Other confirmed film items are from such classics as The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, and The Ten Commandments. But Mayor Eric Garcetti and others lobbied the filmmaker to bring the museum to Los Angeles.

Inspired by the storytelling and myth creation that is possible through filmmaking, the museum is planned to open very close to the University of Southern California, Lucas' alma mater.

The museum will be sited near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Natural History Museum, and a museum of African-American history and art. Offering 300,000 square feet of floor space, it will include a cafe and restaurant, theatres, lecture halls, classrooms and exhibition space. Lucas obliged, but when one autograph hound asked for one signature too many, Lucas clearly grew annoyed. "We think you will see a bit of yourself in the collection - even in stories from long ago or depictions of worlds in the distant future".

Popular art, he said, is the glue that holds people together, that teaches them that while we may have differences we have similar aspirations.
