Trump offers help to parents of sick baby

Donald Trump set to 'grill Theresa May over Charlie Gard' in on-one-one meeting at G20 summit

U.S President Donald Trump had stated that the USA would be "delighted" to help the baby, and White House officials have reportedly spoken with the family to offer support.

The European Court of Human Rights refused to intervene. The hospital will remove Charlie Gard from a life support machine against his parents' wishes.

The Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome has asked the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) if the child could be transferred.

There is a widespread and nearly visceral feeling at home and overseas that the law made a gross mistake in the tragic case of Charlie Gard.

Charlie was born in August with a rare genetic condition called infantile-onset encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, according to court records. The family has already received donations for over almost $1.7 million to take him to the US for therapy.

Charlie's parents want to take him to the United States for an experimental medical treatment they believe may prolong his life, but a succession of judges have backed specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London who say the therapy won't help Charlie and may cause him to suffer. Even offers of help from the Vatican have been denied.

A White House spokesman later clarified that members of the Trump administration had "talked to the family on phone calls arranged by the British government".

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano that it is "right that decisions continue to be led by expert medical opinion, supported by the courts", according to the Press Association in the United Kingdom.

After a confusing message from the Vatican's Pontifical Academy for Life, in which they seemed to side with the British hospital's life ending decision, Pope Francis was compelled to put out his own statement about Baby Charlie, reiterating the need to protect life at all costs.

"They are traditional men who believe in the family", she said of Francis and Trump.

The intervention comes after the Pope tweeted his support for the little boy who said it is a duty of love entrusted by God to all. "The president is just trying to be helpful if at all possible", she said, calling the situation "heartbreaking".
