UK Parents Say Life Support to End for Terminally Ill Son

The ten month old suffers from a rare disease known as rare mitochondrial depletion syndrome.

There is no known cure, but his parents had hoped to try an experimental treatment in the United States and had raised the funds through crowdfunding efforts.

The ECHR noted that the United Kingdom courts had concluded that "it was most likely Charlie was being exposed to continued pain, suffering and distress and that undergoing experimental treatment with no prospects of success would offer no benefit, and continue to cause him significant harm".

The court's ruling closed any further path of legal recourse and sealed Charlie's fate.

They had previously said his mechanical ventilator would be switched off on Friday after Tuesday's decision by the European court of human rights (ECHR) to uphold the judgments of the British courts that found in favour of Great Ormond Street hospital.

The court decision means he can't go to the US for experimental treatment called nucleoside therapy, which his parents wanted.

The court said that they did not believe that the experimental treatment in the USA would benefit Charlie, and that it would cause him "significant harm".

One option, the couple said, was to let Charlie die at home.

"We can't even take our own son home to die, we have been denied that, do you not think we have been put through enough?"

Baby Charlie was born "perfectly healthy" at a full term on August 4, 2016, but after a month, his parents noticed that he was less able to lift his head or support his body weight compared to other babies his age.

The Supreme Court is the last chance for Charlie's parents Chris Gard and Connie Yates to keep their son alive.

The boy's parents also claimed that the hospital refused their request to delay removing life support until members of their extended family can pay a final visit to Charlie.

In February 2017, the treating hospital sought a declaration from the domestic courts as to whether it would be lawful to withdraw artificial ventilation and provide Charlie with palliative care. In October, he was transferred to the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

However, the court in Strasbourg, France, ultimately ruled that the imperative to act in Charlie's best interests and not prolong his suffering outweighed the vanishingly small likelihood of successful treatment.

In May, Chris and Connie took the case to the Court of Appeals. "Please respect our privacy while we prepare to say the final goodbye to our son Charlie". "They have agreed to give us a little bit more time". The hospital, in turn, said they would not release the boy because the treatment might not be the best course of action.
