US Airstrike Kills Afghan Police Members; More Than A Dozen Killed

An Afghan policeman holds a rocket-propelled grenade during an ongoing battle with Taliban militants in the Gereshk district of Helmand province Saturday. A U.S. airstrike killed 16 policemen in the area on Friday local officials said

Afghan national security forces have been engaged in fierce clashes to retake Helmand Province as much of its territory is under the control of Taliban.

"In the strike, 16 Afghan policemen were killed including two commanders".

The latest incident took place on Friday afternoon in the Gereshk district.

In February, a USA airstrike in Sangin killed at least 18 civilians, mostly women and children.

A spokesman for the local police said the officers were bombed as they mounted an operation against Taliban insurgents in Helmand province on Friday.

On Friday, Helmand Gov. Hayatullah Hayat said it was believed that the police officers were not in uniform, which may have resulted in mistakenly identifying them as Taliban fighters. Taliban have in the past exaggerated their successes and the remoteness of the area makes it near impossible to independently verify.

Fighting in the Helmand region has intensified in recent weeks.

A USA air strike killed an unknown number of Afghan security personnel in a so-called "friendly fire" incident in the southern province of Helmand on Friday, the US military said, as fighting in the area has intensified over recent days, according to Reuters.

Mattis said he had already installed some adjustments to the fight in Afghanistan, where the United States has drastically increased its use of airstrikes in 2017.

Afghan officials were notified about the incident and an investigation is pending.

In June, the U.S. surpassed the total number of aerial attacks in Afghanistan past year, with 1,634 airstrikes conducted primarily in the south - in and around Helmand - and against Islamic State groups in the east.

In a separate development, there are reports of numerous casualties after the Taliban ambushed an Afghan police patrol in the north-eastern Badakhshan province.

Seven passengers were killed, while another 20 people managed to escape, he said.
