8 injured in Russian Federation knife attack

Two of those stabbed are in a serious condition while five more are in a stable condition

As per a report in Reuters, the Islamic State has claimed the responsibility for the attack. The attacker has not been identified, according to the same source. An earlier statement said eight people had been wounded, but that was later revised to seven. The man then left the store and attacked pedestrians outside, the posts said.

Authorities say they are considering "possible psychiatric disorders" of the suspect, who was a local resident born in 1994.

Witnesses posting updates on Russian social media said a man had walked through a department store in the city, carrying a knife and an ax. "What is that, if not a terrorist attack?"

The Investigative Committee has opened criminal proceedings.

Police are now trying to verify the identity of the attacker and his motive for the crime.

None of the victims have died - however two are in a serious condition. Two have already been discharged.

The local office of the Russian law enforcement issued a statement that said: "A man was moving along the main streets stabbing people".

The incident took place in a city in the oil-rich Khanty-Mansi region, some 1,330 miles northeast of Moscow.
