Australian PM: Terror Plot To Bring Down Plane Foiled

People crowd a terminal at Sydney's domestic airport as passengers are subjected to increased security in Sydney Australia Monday

Domestic passengers are being advised to arrive two hours before their flights, and worldwide passengers three hours before, to allow for the extra security checks imposed after police foiled a Sydney-based plot to bomb a passenger plane.

A large-scale security operation is under way in Sydney where four men have been arrested.

The four individuals in custody have not been charged and Mr Colvin said police would request a magistrate extend their holding period, noting terrorism laws allow police to hold the men for up to week.

The Department of Homeland Security said Sunday it is closely monitoring the foiled Australia terrorist plot in which extremists planned an attack by targeting an airplane.

Australia's terrorism threat level remains in the middle at "probable", the Prime Minister said, between "possible" and "expected".

"We face a range of terrorist threats", Turnbull told reporters.

"Some of the measures will be obvious to the public, some will not be", Mr Turnbull said.

The situation appears to be worst at Sydney Airport, where the queue snaked out of the domestic terminal and onto the pavement.

For passengers taking a domestic flight, they were advised to arrive at least two hours before their trip while those taking an global flight may arrive three hours earlier.

The 2014 Lindt cafe siege in Sydney, in which the hostage-taker and two people were killed, was Australia's most deadly violence inspired by the so-called Islamic State.

"We've taken this threat very seriously", AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin said.

A 39-year-old man was treated in Sydney's St. Vincent hospital following the Saturday raids, the hospital confirmed to CNN, but they wouldn't say if he was one of the suspects.

Big delays at Adelaide Airport this morning.

But a number of users on social media praised Qantas and Sydney airport workers for getting passengers through quickly.

"Police will allege they had the intent and were developing the capability", Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Authorities have increased security measures at Australian airports, prompting lengthy queues and passenger confusion.

Australia's Justice Minister Michael Keenan said this plot serves as a reminder that while lone wolf attacks are not the only serious threat to their country.
