Central Intelligence Agency head expects more Nth Korea missile tests

(LEAD) CIA chief: No indication of imminent nuclear war with N. Korea

The U.S.is not on the brink of nuclear war with North Korea, but the threat of an armed conflict is the highest it's been in 10 years, President Trump's top national security officials said Sunday.

The call came after Trump made fresh threats against North Korea on Friday, declaring the USA military "locked and loaded" and warning Kim that he "will regret it fast" if he takes any action against US territories or allies.

Despite expecting further missile testing, Mr Pompeo denied there is an imminent threat of nuclear war. "And we can't know, we don't understand, exactly what the decision making mechanisms are, processes surrounding Kim Jong Un in North Korea or what would set him off".

The CIA chief described Mr Kim as "rational" and responsive to "adverse circumstances".

Also on Sunday, the top USA military officer, Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, travelled to South Korea. He also will discuss military options in the event the "diplomatic and economic pressurization campaign" fails.

"We're all looking to get out of this situation without a war", he added. "President Trump has made it clear that it is his intention to protect the American people".

But he rejected talk of the USA being on the "cusp of nuclear war".

The North then came out with a threat to lob four intermediate-range "Hwasong-12" missiles near Guam, a tiny USA territory some 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from the North's capital, Pyongyang.

National security adviser H.R. McMaster said Trump has asked for a report on what could happen next in the country.

Arreaza accused Trump of "warmongering" and said Trump's comments represented "the United States' systematic aggression against Venezuela".

Clapper called for a change in approach with North Korea in "accepting" the dictatorship as a nuclear power and merely attempting to "cap it or control it".

Trump has responded to North Korea's threats with his own fiery rhetoric.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States", the president declared before the White House press pool Tuesday. "But each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons test, they develop expertise, they expand the envelope, and so it is probably fair to say they are moving toward that at an ever-alarming rate".
