Channel 4 refusing to pull controversial Diana documentary

Prince William Duke of Cambridge Catherine Duchess of Cambridge Prince George of Cambridge and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge view helicopter models H145 and H135 before departing from Hamburg airport on the last day of their official visit to Poland

Talking to Radio Times, Ralph Lee of Channel 4 defended the decision to air the footage; he stated that Diana is clearly aware that she is being interviewed in the tapes and that the public see this type of interview in documentaries all of the time.

The channel also said Monday that the recordings "provide a unique insight into the preparations Diana undertook to gain a public voice and tell her own personal story".

The tapes reveal that when Diana confronted Prince Charles about his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, he responded coldly.

Channel 4, who will broadcast the programme on August 6, said the tapes offered an "important contribution to the historical record".

The recording claim Princess Diana feared Palace officials were plotting to undermine her and take her sons away.

On her attempt to confide in the Queen: "I went to the top lady and said: "I don't know what I should do". "He chatted me up", Diana said.

The broadcaster acquired the rights to sensitive camcorder recordings between Diana and her speech coach Peter Settelen, which were captured at her private residence of Kensington Palace in 1993.

She told The Telegraph that the documentary was "another way of exploiting Diana" and that it was not what either Prince Charles or his children would have wanted.

The tapes make up a very intimate portrait of Diana in the documentary which will include participation from Anne Allan, her dance teacher, Patrick Jephson, her private secretary, and her close friend Dr. James Colthurst.

He also stressed they would not be authorising any "friends" to speak out against the documentary Diana: In Her Own Words on their behalf. "It was clear to all those who knew her that the bulimia was a reaction to the circumstances she found herself in".

They show the late Princess rehearsing her speaking voice and revealing stunning admissions about her marriage and public life which paved the way for her famous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir in 1995.

The BBC abandoned plans to broadcast the tapes for fear of upsetting the Royal Family in 2007 but they were aired on American TV network NBC in 2004, a move that was universally condemned.

Princess Diana struggled for years against bulimia and was "fading physically" after learning her husband, the future king of England, was cheating, long-time pals of the late royal said.

She also suggests one of her bodyguards was "bumped off" in a road accident and describes her "very odd" relationship with Charles.

Started by Charles Spencer, 9th earl Spencer: the brother of Diana even tried to prevent this program to go on the air, citing in particular the emotional suffering he may cause to his nephews. Settelen asked her about her sexual relationship with Charles, she replied, "Once every three weeks and then it fizzled out about seven years ago, six years ago".
