Google cancels all-staff diversity meeting — BBCI

Over 60 women are considering suing Google over claims of sexism and low pay

Pichai cancelled the meeting after several questions employees had for the management began to leak online from the company's internal messaging service, AP reported.

In what we can only assume is great news for AltaVista and Ask Jeeves, anti-diversity advocates and the "PC culture-gone crazy" crowd have declared war on Google, attempting to organize a march on several of its business headquarters in the USA, scheduled to take place next week. The first step taken by the Google CEO against James Damore, who initiated the letter, was to terminate him for this controversy.

Inside Google, the memo and its fallout represent perhaps the biggest setback to what has been a foundational premise for employees: the freedom to speak up about anything and everything. This particular subset of white men is capable of working in supporting roles, possibly supplying a company's more biologically qualified women or people of color with printer paper, or perhaps procuring coffee for them while they write sensible diversity memos. Earlier this week, company engineer James Damore was sacked after suggesting biological differences were partly responsible for gender disparities among employees at the tech giant. Since then, some on the right have embraced Damore as a victim of Silicon Valley liberal groupthink.

His views came after an anti-diversity memo written by one of its engineers James Damore went viral.

Lately, Google has been experiencing a hard time keeping up with gender diversity. The author also alleged that employees who stand politically orthodox are discriminated against, and that achieving ideological equality should be a priority. "There were many people that came to me and said, 'yeah I'm thinking of leaving Google because this is getting so bad"'.

"Part of building an open, inclusive environment means fostering a culture in which those with alternative views, including different political views, feel safe sharing their opinions". Damore has said that he is considering legal action against the company.

"At Google, we're regularly told that implicit (unconscious) and explicit biases are holding women back in tech and leadership", Damore said.

US lawmakers in Congress have also urged Google and the whole tech industry to take a hard look at their diversity and inclusion policies, noting they could do better to bring more women and minority representation into the mix.

In his 3,000-word memo, Damore claimed that phenomena such as the gender pay gap were not a product of failed diversity policies, but simply a direct effect of the natural differences between men and women.

"We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism", Mr Damore wrote in his note, which was widely criticised.

"Psychological safety is built on mutual respect and acceptance, but unfortunately, our culture of shaming and misrepresentation is disrespectful and unaccepting of anyone outside its echo chamber", Brown added. The controversy led to Damore being fired by Google on grounds of attacking the company's diversity. "But that discourse needs to work alongside the principles of equal employment found in our Code of Conduct, policies, and anti-discrimination laws", she said in response to the memo.

On the other hand, Google denied all the claims made against it.
