Iran media report Apple shuts down Iranian apps

OFAC Seemingly Against Appleā€™s Anti Iran Bias

Because of US sanctions against the country, the company's iPhones are not legally available for sale here, and Apple does not offer a version of its App Store in the country.

Apple holds 11 percent share of the Iranian cellphone market, however, it has not observed the Iranian consumer rights, Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi was quoted as saying.

Authorities in Iran say Apple has shut down its Iranian apps.

Iran is home to a vibrant developer market, which has given rise to apps like Snapp, an Uber-like, ride-hailing service that has "revolutionized the taxi industry", said Djavad Salehi-Isfahani, professor of economics at Virginia Tech and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Considering that North Korea is constantly threatening South Korea with war and supplying Iran with Nuclear technologies, it's disturbing that not only do they not join the U.S.in sanctioning Iran, they allow Samsung to aggressively open more stores in Iran.

Another popular Iranian app that was recently pulled down was DelionFoods, an online food delivery service company.

Apple's statement to affected developers: "Under the United States sanctions regulations, the App Store can not host, distribute, or do business with apps or developers connected to certain USA embargoed countries".

Google does not appear to have undertaken a similar campaign against apps in its Play Store.

Jamal Abdi, policy director of the National Iranian American Council based in Washington, said in a statement that Apple's move has the effect of punishing the Iranian people, not Iran's government. Like Facebook and YouTube, Twitter is banned by the government in Iran, but determined Iranians still use it to connect with each other and the world at large.

But the Trump administration has adopted a more hawkish posture, putting the 2016 nuclear deal under review, modifying the existing sanction regime and then introducing a fresh round of sanctions last month in response to Iranian ballistic missile tests. Barack Obama's administration eased restrictions on US tech companies that offered Internet services in Iran as a way of encouraging a free flow of information, especially among younger Iranians. We will follow up the cutting of the apps legally. Following this, several app makers moved to the Iranian online payments system Shaparak, cash and other available forms of payment.
