Jordan Moves to Repeal Marry-Your-Rapist Law

A Royal committee had suggested abolishing the article in February and the government endorsed the decision shortly afterwards

Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at the organisation called it "a blight on Jordan's human rights record".

Some lawmakers, and at least one social worker, wanted to keep a version of 308 in place, arguing such marriages could protect rape victims from honor killings, or give them the "choice" to escape stigma, the Times reports. Prime Minister Hani Mulki addressed the plenum before the vote, saying the government backs repeal.

Tuesday's decision must still be approved by parliament's appointed upper house, or Senate, and by King Abdullah II.

The global rights group Human Rights Watch said Lebanon's parliament is also considering repealing such a provision.

A handful of countries, including several in the Arab world as well as in the Philippines, a majority Catholic country, have maintained legal provisions for men accused or convicted of rape to avoid punishment.

Cheers went up from the spectators gallery in Parliament when the measure passed, according to an Associated Press report from Amman, the Jordanian capital.

A royal committee had suggested abolishing the controversial Article 308 in February, among its several recommendation to amend the country's 1960 penal code.

Human rights activists applauded parliament's action.

"The societal discrimination that comes with the stigma of being raped is where practical practices are needed for women's protection, especially if they get pregnant", Amani Rizq, an officer for Swedish gender equality organization Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation in Jordan, told Al Jazeera. "The law still looks at women as bodies, linked with 'honor, '" Abu Halaweh said.
