Sharapova (forearm) withdraws from Stanford tourney

Maria Sharapova in action during her first round win over Jennifer Brady in Stanford

She was competing as a wildcard in her fourth tournament after a 15-month doping ban.

The five-time grand slam victor is still scheduled to compete at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati this month, but will have to go through qualifying to play the US Open if she does not receive a wildcard.

"I am so sorry to be missing Rogers Cup this year", Sharapova said in a press release.

Sharapova suffered the injury while playing in her first USA match in more than two years, defeating American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 in her Monday opener at Stanford.

In her first full season back on tour, Sharapova has gone 5-3, with three of those wins coming at a tournament in Germany, where she reached the semifinals. The former world number one from Russian Federation hadn't played in the USA since March of 2015.

Monday's match against American Brady lasted two hours and two minutes, and Sharapova will play Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko in the second round.

The Russian Maria Sharapova was waived Thursday to participate in the Rogers Cup because of pain in the left arm. After yesterday's scan, the doctor has recommended I don't risk further injury.

Sharapova was denied a wildcard for the French Open earlier this year, and was unable to take part in qualifying for Wimbledon because of injury.

"This is definitely tough for Maria", Bank of the West Classic tournament director Vickie Gunnarsson said, according to the WTA. "We know many of our fans were excited to see her play".
