Supermarkets take egg products off shelves

People stand in front of eggs displayed at a supermarket in Lille France on Friday as a scandal over contaminated eggs spreads across Europe

Denmark is known to be the tenth country who has been affected by the egg scandal with Romania and Luxembourg being the latest ones to report contaminated eggs.

On Thursday, Dutch police arrested two individuals they say could be accountable for allowing the insecticide Fipronil to be used inside Dutch poultry farms, causing millions of potentially contaminated eggs to be taken off European shelves.

European Union health commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said: "I proposed to hold a high-level meeting, gathering the ministers concerned as well as the representatives of the food safety agencies in all member states involved as soon as we have all the facts available". The risk to consumer health is very low.

The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said in a statement that these eggs were mostly sold to catering firms, cafeterias and cafes.

Numerous affected eggs will have already passed through the food chain before anyone was aware of the scandal.

But 11 products containing egg - including sandwiches and salads - have been withdrawn from United Kingdom supermarket shelves as a precaution.

The crisis also crossed the border into Belgium and Germany, with millions of eggs removed from the shop shelves as well.

Most eggs imported into the United Kingdom are used by caterers, or are processed for food manufacturers and other businesses for use in products with eggs as an ingredient.

The FSA said decision to withdraw the products was not due to food safety concerns but based on the fact that the pesticide is not authorised for use in food-producing animals.

Agriculture officials in Portugal have moved to quell fears about contaminated eggs reaching supermarket shelves here, saying none of the affected lots were ever intended for this country. It can harm people's kidneys, liver and thyroid glands.

The problem, which is believed to have originated from Belgian and Dutch poultry farms, was first reported towards the end of July when Belgian health authorities finally admitted that test results on eggs in its poultry farms showed high levels of insecticide.

Two directors of the company at the centre of the scandal were arrested on Thursday by Dutch authorities.

However, the Food Standards Agency is also playing down public health risks, saying it affects less than one percent of eggs consumed in Britain.

In Belgium, 11 search warrants were carried out in the framework of the investigation, which now targets 26 individuals and companies that suspect.

He said the eggs came from the Netherlands and were delivered by a German company.
