Trump's favorability rating falls in three key states he won in 2016

President Donald Trump Charlottesville statement

In what could mark the first clear signs that support for President Donald Trump is dropping in the Rust Belt battleground, a new set of polls shows people in three key states aren't so fond of the commander in chief.

In Michigan, 36-percent of those polled approve of President Trump's job performance. while 55-percent disapprove.

In Pennsylvania, 17% of voters strongly approve of Trump while 54% disapprove-41% of them strongly.

Support for Trump stands at below 40 percent in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, according to recent NBC News/Marist polls. 42 percent of MI voters and 45 percent of Pennsylvania voters agreed that Trump has helped improved the economy.

One of the few bright spots in the poll for Trump lies in his handling of the economy, where 44 percent of Americans believe the economy has strengthened based on his decisions, compared to 46 percent who feel that it has weakened under his guardianship. Sixty-four percent in MI and Wisconsin said they were embarrassed.

More than 60 percent of voters in all three states say they've been embarrassed by Trump's conduct as president, according to the poll.

Pennsylvania and Wisconsin voters preferred the Democrats too, with Pennsylvanians giving the Dems a 10 point advantage and Wisconsinites giving them an 8 point edge.

This latest poll contrasts slightly with a national poll conducted by Quinnipiac University that showed an uptick in Trump's approval rating.

While former President Barack Obama won Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania in 2008 and 2012, Trump was able to flip the states during the 2016 election, helping put him over the electoral college threshold needed to win the presidency.

In Pennsylvania, Democrats lead preferences by 10 points on congressional preference, 47% to 37%.

The polls were conducted August 13-17, after last weekend's white supremacist rally and violence in Charlottesville, Va., and amid the fallout from Trump's response to those events. By Tuesday, Trump doubled down on his initial statements, saying "both sides" were to blame and equating left wing groups with the white supremacists they came to protest.
