UF Denies White Nationalist Request To Speak

Prominent White Supremacist Richard Spencer Schedules Potential Event At The University Of Florida

At the University of Florida, where Spencer has asked to speak, President W. Kent Fuchs called the events in Virginia "deplorable" but indicated school officials might be unable to block his appearance.

The so-called alt-right is a fringe movement that has been described as a mix of racism, white nationalism and populism.

But following violent, racially-charged unrest over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, Fuchs said the university denied the National Policy Institute's request, citing public safety concerns.

The National Policy Institute has reached out to the university to reserve space for a speaking event featuring white nationalist and "alt-right" activist Richard Spencer on September 12.

"We're concerned about what might happen at the University of Florida and we're having to grapple with a lot of the same things our community is grappling with: Free speech versus our safe community", said Janine Sikes, the UF spokeswoman.

Padgett previously sued Auburn University in Alabama after administrators tried to cancel an April 18 Spencer speech on its campus, despite having a contract with him for the event.

While the planned event has not been confirmed by either the University of Florida or the National Policy Institute, students and local residents have already begun to make plans. He said he created the group because he knew if there was going to be a way to get people together against Spencer speaking at UF, they had to assemble sooner rather than later.

The debate over free speech on college campuses also played out earlier this year at the University of California Berkley, where conservative writer Ann Coulter and right-wing provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos had events canceled amid violent protests on campus.

"The likelihood of violence and potential injury - not the words or ideas - has caused us to take this action", Fuchs said.

"It's a good reason", Choper said.

"Whether it's the KKK, whether it's Neo-Nazis, White Supremacists, it's evil". Stay tuned for more on this coming soon! "This event is not finalized, and it is still under discussion", Fuchs wrote. But Kyle Bristow, who graduated from MSU in 2009 with a degree in global relations from James Madison College, was a featured speaker at the 2016 Alt-Right Conference in Detroit.

Fuchs should reconsider his decision and work with law enforcement on a security plan that protects the First Amendment rights of everyone.

"There is a free speech element involved, but I think given the violence and racial bigotry that they expressed in Charlottesville, I certainly don't want them in our state", Dillon said. I again denounce all statements and symbols of hate.

Students at Florida Gulf Coast University are reacting to the University of Florida's decision barring a white nationalist group from protesting there.
