US, South Korea engage in war games over North Korea's missile threat

California groups protest “radioactive” Livermore nuke lab

The United States had been conducting regular "command and control" drills in the years following the 1950-53 Korean War, but combined exercises with the South Korean military following the failed raid, in which all but two of the North Korean commandos were killed.

Thousands of USA and South Korean soldiers will begin military exercises on Monday, prompting China and North Korea to respond by asking the two countries to cancel the drills. The Pentagon fears that North Korea is developing the hydrogen bomb and can complete it through 6-18 months.

Strategic assets of the USA military, including an aircraft carrier and a nuclear-powered submarine, may not be deployed during the upcoming joint exercises on the Korean peninsula.

"We can not stand the fact the enemy tries to form schemes to assassinate our leadership", North Korea's state news agency, KCNA, said in July.

The statement also said that, "UFG is computer simulated defensive exercise created to enhance readiness, protect the region and maintain stability on the Korean peninsula".

"The exercises are very important to maintaining the ability of the alliance to defend itself", U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford said.

Provocative language has been in the air between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the US, with US President Donald Trump trading threats with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The North later said it was holding off firing towards Guam, while it waited to see what the United States would do next.

Tensions escalated in July after Pyongyang conducted two intercontinental ballistic (ICBM) missile tests and claimed the projectiles are capable of reaching the United States mainland and carrying a nuclear weapon, an assessment some regional and Western analysts concur with.

The war games are expected to be finished by August 30. In the past, some 25,000 servicemen participated in the joint exercises, which included Britain, Australia, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, New Zealand and the Netherlands.
