'US would win': Defence Secretary Jim Mattis warns North Korea

US missile defence territory at 'serious risk' of North Korea attack

Defense Secretary James Mattis on Wednesday warned North Korea that its people would be destroyed in a nuclear war with the USA - an escalation of rhetoric as other administration officials were trying to downplay the threat.

"The (North Korean) regime's actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by ours and would lose any arms race or conflict it initiates".

Referring to the volatile Kim, Trump said, "He has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said, they will be met with fire and fury, and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before". A new report says Pyongyang's nuclear program is progressing. He said Kim Jong Un's regime should listen to and "act on that clarity".

These are some of strongest comments Mattis has made on North Korea.

On Tuesday, Trump warned North Korea not to make any more threats against the United States.

The news comes after dictator Kim Jong Un threatened to attack US forces in Guam after revelations that his regime now has mini-nukes. "The DPRK should cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people", he added.

Britain's UN ambassador said the United Kingdom "stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States" in tackling the nuclear threat from North Korea and making sure it can not pursue its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

In September 2016, the regime tested a bomb with a blast estimated at twice the size of the one detonated over Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II.

"My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal".

He also issued a direct warning to North Korea's leader. "They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen".

So far, Florida's highest ranking Democrat isn't criticizing President Donald Trump's response.

"China calls on all sides to uphold the main direction of a political resolution to the Korean peninsula nuclear issue, and avoid any words or actions that may intensify the problem and escalate the situation", the government said in a statement sent to Reuters, repeating its customary stance.

Members of the US intelligence community believe that North Korea's nuclear capabilities may be more advanced than initially thought and the country might have developed the technology to miniaturize a nuclear warhead so it can be placed inside an intercontinental ballistic missile, a USA official told ABC News on Tuesday.
