War in Yemen causing starvation, cholera — United Nations aid chief

Yemen hit by more airstrikes in 1st half of 2017 than in whole of 2016 – aid agencies

"Attacks carried out by air caused over half of all child casualties, with at least 349 killed and 333 injured", the draft report found.

A Saudi-led coalition, composing a number of Arab states, intervened to back Yemen's pro-legitimacy forces to regain control over the war-torn country and counter the foreign agenda militias are believed to promote.

Last year Saudi Arabia was initially included in the list but Ban Ki Moon, then secretary-general, backtracked after it threatened to stop funding.

He said Egypt, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Arab League all supported his proposals and that he was hoping to meet with the Houthis outside of Yemen to discuss the possible deal.

The Saudi-led coalition had been named on the blacklist a year ago after the United Nations report blamed it for 60 percent of child deaths and injuries in Yemen in 2015 and half the attacks on schools and hospital.

"We trust that the United Nations will make the appropriate decision on this matter", taking into consideration an ongoing review with the U.N. and "the positive exchange of information" on the coalition's activities, the statement said. It declined to comment on the findings in the draft report for 2016.

Speaking anonymously due to restrictions on talking to media, the source told Anadolu Agency that the troops would be used to secure several vital facilities, including Aden's airport, seaport and the Maashiq Presidential Palace.

"It is simply wrong to insist these cargoes go to Aden, not Hodeidah", O'Brien told the U.N. Security Council, appealing for countries to back a U.N. mechanism that started inspecting commercial shipments to rebel-held ports in May past year.

There is no sign of improvement in the conflict, with number of air strikes per month now three times higher than a year ago and monthly reports of armed clashes up 50 per cent, he said. "However, despite these measures, grave violations against children continued at unacceptably high levels in 2016".
