Why the Paris Agreement on climate change could be in trouble

UN officially notified of US intention to withdraw from Paris climate pact

The study shows that average temperatures in the United States have risen rapidly since 1980. All that remains to be seen is whether the Trump administration will approve and release it to the public.

Michael Oppenheimer, a professor of geoscience and global affairs at Princeton University, told The New York Times, which first wrote about the report, "This is the first case in which an analysis of climate change of this scope has come up in the Trump administration, and scientists will be watching very carefully to see how they handle it". The planet is steadily inching toward an average increase in global temperature of 2 degrees Celsius, the point that sets alarm bells ringing for scientists who warn of climate catastrophe.

Titled the Climate Science Special Report, it is based on the work of scientists from 13 federal agencies, and it concludes that it is "extremely likely" that more than half of the increase in global temperatures over the past 40 years is because of human activity.

The most recent federal report on climate change in Canada appears to be a Natural Resources Canada report from 2014.

"Just because we pulled out of the Paris accord doesn't mean we don't believe in climate protection", she said.

It's very disappointing, yet entirely predictable to learn The New York Times would write off a draft report without first verifying its contents with the White House or any of the federal agencies directly involved with climate and environmental policy.

"We have not received any indication yet that it is not on schedule for publication", said Katharine Hayhoe, a professor of political science at Texas Tech University and one of the lead authors of the report. In his first six months Trump picked a climate change denier to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, rolled back around two dozen environmental regulations, and announced that the USA will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement. The assessment is mandated by Congress every four years.

The final climate report will be edited by the U.S. Global Change Research Program.

"This is the first case in which an analysis of climate change of this scope has come up in the Trump administration", Michael Oppenheimer, a professor of geoscience and global affairs at Princeton University, told the Times "Scientists will be watching very carefully to see how they handle it". It was leaked to The New York Times amid concerns the Trump administration would try to bury the report.

Trump has both supported and rejected the concept of human-caused climate change. Increases in the United States are expected to spike by 5 degrees by century's end with lower emissions, and by nearly 9 degrees with higher emissions, making parts of the country potentially unlivable outside of climate-controlled environments. Last year, he said he thinks "there is some connectivity" between human activity and climate change. The landmark 195-nation pact sets out stringent standards to restrict carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases that scientists say contribute to climate change.
