Zimbabwe's first lady returns home amid assault claims

Mrs Mugabe's immunity wont stop the fight lawyers of assault victim warn

AfriForum's chief Kallie Kriel said Monday that the civil rights organization was preparing a court injunction to set aside the decision to grant diplomatic immunity to Grace Mugabe after she reportedly assaulted Gabriella Engels, a 20-year-old model, with an electrical extension cord at a hotel in Johannesburg.

Pursued by demands she should face prosecution over the alleged assault of a 20-year-old model last week.

South Africa's government said it had not yet chose to grant the Zimbabwe government's request for diplomatic immunity for Grace Mugabe.

South African police had issued a "red alert" at borders to ensure she didn't leave undetected and said they were waiting for a government decision on the immunity appeal.

"She will get it because if we don't, this thing will have an impact on the relations between the two countries and the rest of the region".

The victim, Gabriela Engels accused the first lady of walking into a hotel room and beating 'the hell out of her with an electric cable.

Engels appeared at a press conference Thursday with a large white bandage on her forehead.

The lawyers did not reveal the amount offered.

The family's even been approached by a third party to accept an amount of money to settle this, Mr Nel claimed.

South African authorities are weighing a request by Zimbabwe's government for diplomatic immunity for the first lady, who has not commented.

"The suspect's lawyers and her government representatives made verbal representations to SAPS investigators that the suspect wished to invoke diplomatic immunity cover and thus she elected to change her mind about the warning statement", the ministry added.

On what could be a challenged decision by South African authorities, Grace Mugabe was allowed to return home without answering charges from Ms. Engels.

"We will know the actual cost in the course of next week, as we must take into account a number of cost elements", he said.

As word spread of Engels' claim, some protesters gathered in Pretoria and chanted, "Grace is a disgrace".

According to South African legislation, she can only be granted immunity if her visit to South Africa was gazetted by the Department of International Relations and Co-operation (Dirco) in advance. South Africa has been mulling over whether or not she qualifies for diplomatic immunity.

"Firstly‚ for it to apply‚ she needs to be here on official business. It won't apply if she's here on holiday or for something else", Monyela told the Sowetan. Zimbabwe government officials were not available.

The outspoken wife of president Robert Mugabe has been criticised for a fiery temper and lavish shopping expeditions, but her rising political profile has raised questions about whether she is manoeuvring to succeed her husband.

Grace has in the past been caught in incidents of violence.
