China calls for halt to THAAD deployment

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and South Korean Defense Minister Song Young-moo spoke yesterday to discuss North Korea's September 2 test of a nuclear device, chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana W. White said.

The ministry said on Wednesday that it made the decision together with the US, adding the four launchers will be deployed with USA construction equipment and resources to augment the THAAD site in Seongju, North Gyeongsang Province.

South Korean local residents are protesting against the US THAAD deployment missile systems.

North Korea, meanwhile, has not ceased its daily threats to attack the United States and South Korea.

Trump is to speak Wednesday with China's president.

Following North Korea's repeated provocations-including launching a missile over northern Japan last week and a sixth nuclear test on Sunday-Moon appeared significantly more comfortable with the presence of the US system over South Korea's skies.

And for good reason: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned that the missile launch was "the first step of the military operation of the [Korean People's Army] in the Pacific and a meaningful prelude to containing Guam".

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang expressed grave concerns over the planned additional installation as he urged South Korea and the United States to withdraw the THAAD system.

South Korea says the USA military will begin adding more launchers to a contentious high-tech US missile defense system in South Korea on Thursday to better cope with North Korean threats.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday that the North Korean nuclear crisis can not be resolved by sanctions alone, and urged the global community not to push Pyongyang into a corner.

They also agreed to keep cooperating in a campaign to apply "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang in order to force its leadership to abandon the nuclear and missile programs, said the ministry.

"China is seriously concerned", foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular news briefing yesterday, reiterating China's opposition to the deployment of THAAD by the United States and South Korea.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has said ahead of a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin that he hopes their two countries can work together to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.
