Dele Alli handed one-game ban

FA to appeal any World Cup ban on Dele Alli

England midfielder Dele Alli has been banned for one global match by football's governing body Fifa, for a middle finger gesture he brandished during England's 2-1 victory over Slovakia earlier this month.

The 21-year-old could be suspended for as many as four competitive fixtures for an offensive gesture jokingly used towards team-mate Kyle Walker in a 2-1 win over Slovakia earlier this month.

Alli has been banned for one England match for "offensive and unsporting" behaviour. "Our hope, obviously, is that common sense prevails and that he is available for our matches, but we have to wait and see on that".

"The reality is, what I don't want is players to be comfortable", said Southgate.

The Three Lions face Slovenia and Lithuania in World Cup qualifying fixtures over the upcoming worldwide break.

Gareth Southgate has made the frank admission that there are players in his current England squad who "do not deserve to be there", with injuries having opened the door to some who have barely figured his season.

"He is not training", said Southgate. We've had a good chat with Dele about lots of different things and the biggest disappointment for him is that he has to miss football.

England leads Group F by five points and will qualify automatically with a victory.

"He is a young player, a young man, and young people are always going to make mistakes", Southgate said. "You want players who want to be the best", Southgate added.

He expects to hear the governing body's verdict today but Southgate said whatever happens, Alli knows he can not step out of line again.

Southgate has left out Leicester hot-shot Jamie Vardy who is nursing a hip injury, even though he expects him to play at Bournemouth tomorrow.

England are on course to secure their place in Russian Federation, next summer.
