Far-Reaching Immigrant Protections Bill Passes in California

State Sen. Toni Atkins D San Diego receives congratulations from Sen. Scott Wiener D San Francisco after her housing measure was approved by the state Assembly Thursday Sept. 14 2017 in Sacramento Calif. The California Assembly has approved a mul

According to the Los Angeles Times, lawmakers there "passed a Senate bill that would turn the state into a sanctuary for immigrants without legal residency in the country" - a political and legislative move seen by many as a direct response to the president's back-and-forth over DACA and Attorney General Jeff Sessions's boisterous support for exacting strict limits on legal and illegal immigration.

Under the law, state and local law enforcement officers will not be permitted to ask about a person's immigration status during an arrest or police stop, and their communication with federal immigration authorities will be limited.

There are an estimated 2.3 million undocumented immigrants in California, and Republicans opposed to the measure say it will protect criminals.

"With SB 54, California will meaningfully improve state law to keep families together and communities whole-and not a moment too soon as the Trump administration continues its draconian and indiscriminate crackdown on immigrants".

Earlier, the bill also would have prevented local and state law enforcement from relaying information to federal immigration officers unless it was about a person convicted of a violent or serious crime.

State Sen. Kevin De León, who introduced the bill, said it "reflects the values of who we are as a great state".

But they will be prohibited from from transferring immigrants to federal authorities if they have committed only minor offenses.

With more than a dozen bills in this year's housing "package" now on their way to the governor's desk, the state Legislature has taken the first and most important step toward addressing California's housing crisis: Recognizing the scope of the problem-and beginning the hard work of developing solutions on the scale needed to solve it. The Trump administration is playing politics with public safety. One lawmaker said the bill would cause "chaos".

More updates to follow on the passage of Senate Bill 54.

The California Police Chiefs Association went neutral on the measure after Brown's demands were reflected in the last round of amendments.

A federal judge in Chicago ruled Friday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions can not follow through with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to so-called sanctuary cities for refusing his order to impose tough immigration policies.

Trump issued an executive order in January targeting funding for cities that offer illegal immigrants safe harbor by declining to use municipal resources to enforce federal immigration laws.
