Former Florida TE Aaron Hernandez's lawyer: Brain showed 'severe' case of CTE

Aaron Hernandez Found To Have Had CTE

On Thursday, lawyers for Hernandez - who committed suicide in prison on April 19 - announced that the former Patriots tight end suffered from a "severe case" of CTE, the degenerative brain disease that has been found in many former National Football League players, and in a lawsuit, alleged the Patriots and the National Football League were to blame.

Jose Baez, Hernandez's lawyer, told the New York Times on Thursday that Hernandez had "the most severe case [of brain damage] they [McKee's team] had ever seen in someone of Aaron's age". It has been found in athletes including Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau and Pro Bowl safety Dave Duerson, both of whom committed suicide.

Hernandez was diagnosed with the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Hernandez's brain was examined by Dr Ann McKee, the director of the CTE Center at Boston University who developed stages to describe the severity of the disease. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. "CTE is associated with aggressiveness, explosiveness, impulsivity, depression, memory loss and other cognitive changes", the University said in the statement. Just five days after the verdict, Hernandez was found dead in his cell of an apparent suicide. Baez said Thursday he does not expect that the results of the brain study would have any impact on that. The family plans to file legal action against the NFL for not bringing more attention to the disorder in the league. Hernandez was 27 when he hanged himself in prison in April.

"If a child plays football, there is a 100 percent risk exposure to brain damage", he said.

"The data have clearly shown us that those teams have fewer dramatic injuries when it comes to concussion, those concussions are recognized earlier and there's a full recovery in those people", he said.

The $20 million lawsuit is separate from the $1 billion settlement that the NFL has already agreed to with players and their families for football-related head injuries. At the same time he was on trial for Lloyd's murder, Hernandez was indicted in a double-homicide that occurred in 2012.
