Henry Bolton elected the new leader of UKIP in shock result

The new leader said 'Brexit is our core task however it is not the end of the line'

Following Bolton's election as leader, Nigel Farage tweeted: "I am delighted @_HenryBolton has won the UKIP leadership election".

An awkward position for a UKIP leader to be in.

"There'd be a quasi-leadership led by a MEPs and from that a new organisation could form that might even take the UKIP name".

It is believed Mr Farage could make a return to Ukip if anti-Muslim candidate Anne Marie Waters wins the leadership contest.

Controversy about Ms Waters's candidacy had prompted threats from some MEPs that they would leave the party if she won.

The Ukip leadership election was called following the resignation of Paul Nuttall in the wake of the party's disastrous showing at the 2017 election.

Nigel said: "He got my vote that was no doubt at all".

"We can't lead the nation and we can't hold the government to account and we can't achieve our core goal at all", he said.

After the announcement, he told the party members: "Brexit is our core task, however, it is not the end of the line".

Ms Waters has been publicly backed by ex-English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson, has made her stance against Islam a key part of the campaign.

Ms Waters came second in the leadership contest, with 21.3% of the 12,915 votes cast.

A little-known former army officer has been elected leader of Ukip today in a surprise result, becoming the party's fourth leader in less than 18 months. Bolton reportedly said he was "fine" with the new design.

He said: "I do not see myself now as simply being your leader, I see myself as serving this party".

An AfD candidate, Hugh Bronson, is due to address the UKIP faithful, days after his party finished third in Germany's elections on a promise to fight "an invasion of foreigners".
