Kim says 'deranged' Trump shows need for nuclear programme

Liberal thoughts and Nigeria's proud hour at UN

Lu was speaking after United States President Donald Trump signed a new order to boost sanctions against Pyongyang.

Meanwhile, South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, is meeting Mr Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly - an annual event, bringing together leaders of the UN's 193 member states.

Russian Federation also condemned unilateral US sanctions on Iran, saying the move would undermine a collective response to Tehran.

"That would be a disaster beyond compare for the region, for the people of North Korea, who have no dog in this fight, who are just trying to feed themselves", he told reporters in Perth on Friday.

It is unusual for the North Korean leader to issue such a statement in his own name.

It comes as European Union ambassadors agreed draft sanctions against North Korea, including a ban on investments in the country and on EU exports of oil.

On Tuesday, Trump said in his speech to the United Nations that he would "totally destroy" North Korea if threatened and mocked its leader Kim Jong Un as a "rocket man" for his repeated ballistic missile tests.

President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are discussing the ongoing crisis with North Korea.

NEW YORK-The leaders of Japan, the United States and South Korea agreed on September 21 to apply even greater pressure on North Korea to force Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

The UN Security Council subsequently imposed fresh sanctions on North Korea, triggering a furious response from the North.

The statement, which called Trump "a frightened dog" and a "dotard", was delivered by Kim Jong Un himself, and even included a picture of the North Korean leader sitting behind a desk, apparently reading from the statement.

Trump had mentioned in his general debate address on Tuesday the abduction of "sweet 13-year-old Japanese girl" Megumi Yokota, who has become symbolic of the abductees' plight, as well as the death of US student Otto Warmbier shortly after his release from North Korean custody in June.

"I'd like to advise Trump to exercise prudence in selecting words, and to be considerate of whom he speaks to when making a speech in front of the world".

Trump has previously derided Kim Jong Un as "rocket man", both on Twitter and during his United Nations speech.
