Macron vows Caribbean rebuild as anger rises against European powers

Toppled Cranes Floods and More See

When the questioning of the French government's response to the crisis on the two islands affected by the cyclone, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy is now growing, Emmanuel Macron will spend the whole day in order to meet and dialogue with local authorities and inhabitants.

"It's been very useful to see for myself what bad damage this storm has done and in this way to also show the population of St. Martin and the governor and prime minister that we stand together here as a kingdom and that we will solve this together", he told reports on the island.

Many on St Martin, an island which is divided between France and The Netherlands and known for its vibrant nightlife and pristine beaches, had been concerned about where to go ahead of the second storm.

According to the latest official figures, Irma left 10 people dead and seven missing on the French islands, four dead on Dutch territories and six dead on British ones. The U.S. Embassy sustained some damage.

Mr Auger, who weathered the storm on the Caribbean island before being evacuated to Puerto Rico by U.S. military personnel, said that people had pulled together in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane.

President Emmanuel Macron has promised to rebuild France's Caribbean territories in the wake of Hurricane Irma's widespread destruction. "The French were much quicker on St Martin to evacuate people", Kitty Algra, a tourist, told the Dutch newspaper AD.

"I will try my best, but I have nowhere to spend the night", she said, adding that the homes of her family and friends are already full. He will finish off his trip on the nearby island of St. Barts.

The Caribbean's Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) had been quickly activated, accompanied by aid and support from the UK, US, Canadian, French and Dutch governments.

Most people in Cuba's coastal area live in one-story homes, putting them at great risk as floodwaters rose to roof level in some places.

There are just under 500 troops now in the region, made up of marines, engineers, medics and specialists, including Army and Royal Air Force personnel, the Foreign Office said.

Olive said there has been some "disgusting" looting and desperation but also hopeful signs.

Two C-130 transport planes loaded with aid including food, water, tents and building materials landed in Sint Maarten on Sunday, and the Dutch Navy said mass distribution would begin on Monday. "You could put all the people back in Barbuda today ... but then you'll have a medical crisis on your hand", Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Fernandez said.

The Foreign Office said in a statement a team of British humanitarian experts has been in the region for a week working with authorities and directing the humanitarian response.

Under pressure to be more responsive, foreign minister Boris Johnson is expected to travel to the region on Tuesday for a visit to the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla.

Britain has pledged United States dollars 42 million in aid and sent hundreds of troops, supplies and rescue equipment on several flights to the British territories in the Caribbean since Friday.

The Dutch Red Cross has raised RM16m for the devastated islands in under a week.
