Mueller Investigation Into Russian Facebook Ads May Be a Very Big Deal

What $100,000 can buy you on Facebook

Reuters first reported that Facebook had given Mueller data on the ads last week, and the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Facebook turned over copies of the ads and details about how they were targeted and the accounts that purchased them.

"It's likely that Facebook was compelled to turn over the information because the investigating team received a search warrant".

Committees in both the House and Senate committees, like Mueller, are investigating Russia's role in the election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

After global technology giant Facebook made some very crucial revelations in the case, claiming that it had detected some accounts that bought targeted ads - tracing it back to Russian entities - now special counsel in the investigation, former FBI director, Robert Mueller has obtained a search warrant.

Facebook told Congress last week it found about $100,000 in ad spending from June 2015 to May 2017, which were linked to 3,000 ads.

"The key here, though, is that Mueller clearly already has enough information on these accounts - and their link to a potential crime to justify forcing [Facebook] to give up the info", she said.

"Mueller clearly *already* has enough information on these accounts - and their link to a potential crime", tweeted Asha Rangappa, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation counterintelligence agent.

Mariotti said that the Facebook warrant "means that Mueller has concluded that specific foreign individuals committed a crime by making a "contribution" in connection with an election". Evidence has come to light in recent months that people connected to the Russian government used social networks and other media in various ways in attempts to sway public opinion in favor of the Republican candidate, Donald J. Trump, over the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.

The ads and accounts appeared to focus on amplifying divisive social and political messages across the ideological spectrum, touching on topics from LGBT matters to race issues to immigration to gun rights, the social networking giant had earlier said.

"We have shared our findings with United States authorities investigating these issues, and we will continue to work with them as necessary", Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos said in a post last week.

"Platforms like Facebook and Twitter really need to put technical measures in place that would prevent the spread of fake information or the creation of groups that may promote hate speech", Gruzd said. But lawmakers had been frustrated with how little Facebook shared with them beyond the basics, the Journal reported.
