Myanmar accused of planting landmines in path of fleeing Rohingya

Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army The Rohingya Militants Who Tipped Rakhine Into Crisis

The two Rohingya Muslim refugees, Mohammad Sallimullah and Mohammad Shakir, who had knocked the doors of the apex court in the regard, told that they would face death on being deported to Myanmar. A major at the border guard police headquarters in northern Maungdaw near the Bangladesh border also refused to comment.

Small solar panels are everywhere in the makeshift refugee camp that has sprouted up to accommodate numerous more than 270,000 people the United Nations says have entered Bangladesh since the violence started. The clashes have killed more than 400 people and sent about 270,000 Rohingya Muslims fleeing to Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Yanghee Lee, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, has said: "Perhaps about a thousand or more are already dead" in the recent spate of violence in the Rakhine state and that while the figure may be indicative of casualties of both - the minorities and the Myanmar Army - but the deaths "would be heavily concentrated on the Rohingya population".

He said China was also suffering from the Rohingya crisis because it had investments in Myanmar and wanted to revive BCIM (Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar) economic corridor plan.

Some 27,000 ethnic Rakhine Buddhists have also fled in the opposite direction saying Rohingya militants have murdered members of their community.

Suu Kyi, the de facto ruler of Myanmar as state counselor, has repeatedly come under criticism for her lack of action to help the Rohingya, a stark contrast to her previous image as a champion of human rights.

Sectarian violence between the Rohingya and local Buddhist communities broke out in 2012, leaving more than 100 dead and the state segregated along religious lines.

The Rohingyas fled to India after violence in the Western Rakhine State of Myanmar. "Slowly, one after another, villages are being burnt down - I believe that Rohingyas are already wiped out completely from Rathedaung", said one of the sources, Chris Lewa of the Arakan Project, a Rohingya monitoring group.

The fighting forced almost 300,000 Rohingya to flee Myanmar towards the border with Bangladesh, despite facing growing danger of sickness, bullet wounds and attempts by Bangladesh authorities to send them home. Hasina is scheduled to visit Rohingya refugees on Tuesday.

Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi is under pressure from the worldwide community over the Rohingya issue.

The Myanmar government said 421 people had died.

Bangladesh's junior Foreign Minister Mohammed Shahriar Alam said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had 2,000 acres (810 hectares) near the existing camp of Kutupalong "to build temporary shelters for the Rohingya newcomers", according to a message posted Monday on his Facebook account.
