Suu Kyi says Myanmar ready to bring back refugees from Bangladesh

Bangladesh to build new settlements for Rohingya Muslims - Yahoo News India

There have been allegations and counter-allegations.

Throughout the previous year, we continued with our programme of development and establishment of peace, says the Myanmar leader.

"We have to make sure these allegations are based on solid evidence before we take action".

She said her government was prepared to begin verifying the 400,000 refugees who had fled into Bangladesh, in preparation for their repatriation. We will also investigate why so many young Muslims are crossing the border and going to Bangladesh.

While expressing her sorrow for "all" groups displaced by violence, she said her country stood ready "at any time" to take back refugees subject to a "verification" process.

Suu Kyi told foreign diplomats gathered for her speech in Naypyitaw, the capital, that the government was working to restore normalcy in the area. She said the military, which has been accused of massacre and arson, had been asked to exercise restraint and avoid "collateral damage".

Asked if the action was coordinated with global allies, May said: "There has been very clear worldwide concern about the issue of the Rohingya people and what is happening to them". "Myanmar does not fear worldwide scrutiny, we are committed to finding a sustainable solution in Rakhine state".

"While it was positive to hear Aung San Suu Kyi condemn human rights violations in Rakhine state, she is still silent about the role of the security forces in this", James Gomez, Amnesty International's regional director for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, said in a statement.

Myanmar does not fear worldwide scrutiny, committed to sustainable solution in Rakhine state.

"It is sad that in meeting with our diplomatic community I am obliged to focus on just a very few of our problems, when there are so many which I think we could resolve together". In a report, United Nations investigators said such violations may have constituted crimes against humanity.

At a rally in Toronto on Saturday, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said what is happening in Myanmar "looks a lot like ethnic cleansing". Johnson said he was encouraged by the discussion and participation of the senior Burmese officials. Myanmar's Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing referred to members of the community as "extremist Bengalis" who he said were trying to establish a stronghold in Buthidaung and Maungtaw.

Suu Kyi was keen to point out that her government had only been in power for 18 months, which she said was not long enough to reasonably expect the administration to overcome the myriad challenges facing the country.

Meanwhile, while British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson hosted a meeting to discuss the crisis at the United Nations yesterday, he did not call for punitive sanctions on the country, the New York Times reported.
