Thai Supreme Court Sentences Former Prime Minister To 5 Years In Absentia

Yingluck sentenced to prison in absentia

The former Prime Minister of Thailand has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Ousted in 2014, weeks before a military coup, and later impeached, Ms Yingluck denies all charges and fled before the verdict, reportedly to Dubai.

August 2017 - Ms Yingluck fails to appear at court for the verdict, claiming ill health.

Insiders say he has the backing of former leader Thaksin Shinawatra but not necessarily the party's rank and file, Asia Times reports.

Yingluck did not show up at the court and has so far not made any public comment on the verdict.

One Pheu Thai leading member said they have met and agreed not to come to court today as she is absent. "I have spies", he said, adding that to his knowledge Ms Yingluck has not sought asylum overseas.

Authorities said that this caused the country 8 billion dollars in financial losses.

She took office in 2011.

The maximum penalty for this negligence act is ten years in jail, and the judges did not offer an explanation for why Yingluck was sentenced to five years.

Thitinan Pongsudhirak, an award-winning columnist writing in the Bangkok Post and numerous foreign publications, is an associate professor at Chulalongkorn University's faculty of political science, and director of the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS).

On the eve of the verdict junta chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha declared his "spies" had informed him of Yingluck's whereabouts, but said he would not reveal her location until after the judgement was delivered.

Thaksin was toppled from power by a 2006 military coup after being accused of abuse of power, corruption and disrespect for the country's monarchy.
