Trudeau Calls Aung San Suu Kyi, Expresses 'Deep Concerns' Over Rohingya

Myanmar: Trawler carrying Rohingya Muslims sinks near Bangladesh, 2 children dead

There were an estimated 1.1 million Ronhingya in Rakhine state, who have endured decades of persecution in Buddhist-dominated Myanmar.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday condemned the violence in Rakhine State that sparked the mass exodus of Rohingya.

Myanmar has accused the Rohingya of burning their own homes and villages - a claim the United Nations human rights chief criticised as a "complete denial of reality".

It was unclear whether Murphy would be visiting Rakhine State, and Zaw Htay declined to say whether any request by the USA diplomat would be accepted.

Meanwhile, the stream of refugees into Bangladesh continues and the Myanmar military is thought to have laid landmines along the border, making the journey even more risky.

In her first address to the UN General Assembly as national leader in September a year ago, Suu Kyi defended her government's efforts to resolve the crisis over treatment of the Muslim minority.

The ministry said Myanmar's "provocations" could lead to "unwarranted consequences".

The group quoted Rohingya witnesses who described security officers and vigilantes using petrol or shoulder-fired rocket launchers to set homes alight, before firing on villagers as they fled.

Rex Tillerson, in a meeting with Boris Johnson, says the conflict in Myanmar must stop.

Violence, discrimination and a military crackdown on the Rohingya have caused them to flee from Myanmar to Bangladesh by the hundreds of thousands. "The humanitarian situation.is catastrophic". "But women and children are arriving hungry and malnourished", said Mr. Guterres.

There was no mention in the statement of Suu Kyi's reaction to Trudeau's call for ending the violence against the Rohingya, except to say that "the state counsellor expressed appreciation for Canada's contribution to humanitarian efforts".

The violence in Rakhine and the exodus of refugees is the most pressing problem Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has faced since becoming national leader previous year. "We have terrorist attacks and also there are many works on public safety and humanitarian works", spokesman Zaw Htay said in a statement.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad al-Hussein has declared these actions against the Rohingya to be a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

The current crisis erupted on August 25, when an insurgent Rohingya group attacked police outposts in Burma's Rakhine state, killing a dozen security personnel.
