Whole Foods' restaurants, taprooms hit by credit card data hack

Whole Foods Hackers

Whole Foods has suffered a data breach of credit card information, when hackers gained access to data through a point-of-sale vendor that operates in their locations with restaurants/taprooms, the company said Thursday.

Whole Foods shoppers are being urged to check their credit card statements, after the company says it was hacked. Others are in Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston Salem, Burlington and Asheville. There are more than 40 Whole Foods stores across the U.S. that sell beer on tap. IBTimes UK has reached out to Whole Foods for comment. As soon as it discovered the breach, Whole Foods launched an investigation into the matter, contacted law enforcement, and brought in "a leading cyber security forensics firm" to help.

Whole Foods said the investigation is ongoing and more details will be provided once they're available.

Whole Foods couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

In June, in a move that shocked the $800 billion supermarket industry, Amazon.com announced that it would be buying Whole Foods. In an increasingly challenged market, being seen as the grocery store of the elite was bad for business.

Amazon will need to work on its supply issues of Whole Foods products, said Nathan Rigby, vice president of sales and marketing for One Click Retail.

Whole Foods also notes that this does not impact any Amazon-based accounts in any way, as the company's systems aren't linked to Amazon's.

Just this week, for example, fast-food chain Sonic Drive-In said it was investigating an apparent payment card data breach affecting an unspecified number of its 3,500 franchises across the United States. The company has promised to update customers with more information in the future.
